Shirley residents welcome Parkgate
Shirley’s new shopping, leisure and residential development opened today
Thousands of people visited Parkgate on its opening day, Monday 19th May. The new Town Square was packed for the official opening of the £85 million shopping, leisure and residential development and the new 80,000 sq ft ASDA superstore, which opened at 10am.
Councillor Joe Tildesley, Mayor of Solihull, praised the new development, congratulating developer Shirley Advance and welcoming Shirley residents to the important new scheme, before handing over to ‘Superfan’ Mrs Bennett, for the store’s Grand Opening. The Mayor said, “I’m thrilled to have been able to open Parkgate today. It’s an important milestone for Shirley Town Centre and I’d like to wish everyone involved the very best for the future.”
Robert Birch, of developer Shirley Advance said,
“This is a very special day, both for everyone involved in making Parkgate a reality and for the people of Shirley who will enjoy and benefit from it for years to come.
“It’s fantastic to see so many people milling around today, with the opening of ASDA but we’re very much looking forward to welcoming the other shops and restaurants in the coming weeks and months. Everyone needs to keep their eyes on Parkgate as each week there’ll be something new to come and see.’
It wasn’t only ASDA that opened today; 99p Stores launched a big new store, the relocated Shirley Library opened its doors for the first time, with nearly 1,500 visitors on day one and the Baptist Church launched a new venture, Kairos Coffee, which was also opened by the Mayor. Parkside, a collection of townhouses and apartments overlooking Shirley Park and developed by Shirley Advance, was also launched to the public for the first time, with the sales team taking two reservations straight away.
The following shops and restaurants will join ASDA at Parkgate and there are others currently in negotiation, which will be announced shortly:
J D Wetherspoon Peacocks
Pizza Express 99p Stores
Perios Capricorn Blinds
Starbucks Phones 4U
Shake Waffle and Roll The Gym
Loungers Mobile PC
Robert Birch concluded, “I’d like to thank BAM Construction and the professional team including architects, planners, engineers and surveyors, plus the many tradesmen and women who worked on the construction of Parkgate. Our thanks also go to the community groups who are very much at the heart of the development, for their enthusiasm and commitment.”
